What If Baby Won’t Sleep During Newborn Photos? | Birmingham Newborn Photographer

You booked your newborn photography session, picked out the perfect colors, packed the diaper bag, and arrived at the studio.

And then...

Baby refuses to sleep.

Maybe they're wide awake and staring at everything. Maybe they're a little fussy. Maybe they want to eat every 20 minutes. Or perhaps they simply aren't interested in cooperating with your carefully imagined sleepy newborn photos.

Don't panic!

As a Birmingham newborn photographer, I can tell you that this happens—and it is completely okay.

Your baby does not have to sleep the entire session for us to create beautiful newborn portraits.

In fact, some of my favorite images happen when babies are wide awake!

And not to toot my own horn too much, but I have so much experience with all types of newborns. I am really good at soothing newborns. They don't call me a "Baby Whisperer" for nothing...

First: Your Baby Doesn't Have to Sleep for Newborn Photos

When parents look at newborn photography portfolios, they often see beautifully posed, peacefully sleeping babies.

It's easy to assume that's what every newborn session looks like.

But newborns are unpredictable little humans.

Some babies sleep through almost everything. Others want to look around, stretch, wiggle, eat, cuddle, and make sure they don't miss a single thing.

And that's okay.

A professional newborn photography session should be flexible enough to accommodate your baby's needs—not force your baby into a particular schedule.

What If Baby Is Wide Awake?

A wide-awake newborn isn't a problem.

Those beautiful open eyes can actually create some incredibly sweet portraits.

Awake images can capture:

  • Your baby's beautiful eyes
  • Tiny facial expressions
  • Little stretches
  • Curious looks
  • Tiny fingers and toes
  • Those adorable newborn "O" faces

Sometimes your baby's personality shines through most when they're awake.

And years from now, you may love looking back at those alert little eyes and remembering exactly what your baby looked like during those first few weeks.

What If Baby Is Fussy?

Fussing is normal.

Newborns have very few ways to communicate what they need, so crying or fussiness can simply mean:

"I'm hungry."

"I need a diaper change."

"I want to be held."

"I'm tired."

"I don't like that."

During your newborn photography session, we'll take the time to figure out what your baby needs.

There is absolutely no reason to rush through feeding, diaper changes, soothing, or cuddles.

Feeding Breaks Are Completely Normal

One of the biggest things I want new parents to know before their session is:

You can feed your baby whenever they need to eat.

Newborn sessions are intentionally designed with plenty of flexibility.

If baby needs to stop for a feeding, we stop.

If baby needs to be burped, we stop.

If baby needs a little extra cuddling with Mom or Dad, we stop.

A well-fed, comfortable baby is much more likely to settle when they're ready.

And sometimes that extra feeding is exactly what baby needs to drift off into that perfect newborn sleep.

Sometimes Baby Just Needs to Be Held

There is no rule saying your baby has to spend the entire session posing.

Sometimes the best place for your newborn is right in your arms.

Parent portraits are an important part of your newborn photography gallery, and these moments can be some of the most meaningful images you'll receive.

We can capture:

  • Baby snuggled against Mom
  • Dad holding his newborn
  • Tiny fingers wrapped around a parent's hand
  • Baby resting on a parent's chest
  • Family cuddles
  • Sibling connections

These photographs aren't about getting the "perfect pose."

They're about capturing your family's connection.

What If Baby Only Sleeps When They're Being Wrapped?

Then we'll use it!

If your baby settles beautifully in your arms, that's a perfect opportunity for parent and family portraits.

And if baby eventually falls asleep while being wrapped, we can often transition into additional wrapped or posed portraits when they're ready.

There's no need to force a baby into a pose when they're telling us exactly where they feel safest and most comfortable.

A Professional Newborn Photographer Knows When to Slow Down

One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced newborn photographer is knowing that your session doesn't have to follow a rigid timeline.

Newborn photography requires patience.

We may spend time:

  • Feeding
  • Burping
  • Rocking
  • Swaddling
  • Changing diapers
  • Taking cuddling breaks
  • Waiting for baby to settle

And that's all part of the experience.

Your newborn session isn't a race to see how many setups we can complete.

Baby's comfort comes first.

What If Baby Doesn't Like a Certain Pose?

We simply move on.

Every baby is different, and not every pose works for every newborn.

Your baby may love being wrapped but hate being unwrapped.

They may love being on their back but dislike being on their tummy.

They may settle beautifully in a prop but become upset when moved.

That's okay!

We work with your baby rather than trying to make your baby fit a particular image.

The goal isn't to recreate a Pinterest photo.

The goal is to create beautiful portraits of your baby.

Your Baby's Safety Always Comes First

Beautiful newborn photography should never come at the expense of safety.

If your baby is uncomfortable, we stop.

If a pose isn't working, we move on.

If baby needs to be held or soothed, we take the time to do it.

And when a baby is sleeping, safe sleep practices remain important.

When at home and not being monitored or specially posed, American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing babies on their backs for sleep on a firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface without loose bedding or soft objects.

For parents looking for more information about safe sleep, the American Academy of Pediatrics' HealthyChildren.org has a helpful collection of evidence-based safe sleep resources.

What Can Parents Do to Help Baby Sleep During Newborn Photos?

While there are no guarantees that a newborn will sleep, there are a few things that can help make the session more comfortable.

Feed Baby Before the Session

If baby is hungry, sleep is probably not going to be the priority!

Give your baby a good feeding before we begin, but don't worry if they need another feeding once we're at the studio.

Bring a Pacifier

Even if your baby doesn't normally use one, bringing a pacifier can be helpful during a newborn session.

It can provide a little extra soothing between poses or while we're transitioning.

Don't Stress About the Schedule

This one is for Mom and Dad.

Your baby can sense when you're stressed, and newborn sessions are much more enjoyable when everyone takes a breath and relaxes.

You don't have to arrive with a perfectly sleeping baby.

That's my job to work around.

What Happens at My Springville, Alabama Newborn Photography Studio?

My Springville studio is designed around the needs of newborns and their families.

We have plenty of time built into the session for baby-led breaks, feedings, diaper changes, cuddles, and soothing.

Your session may include a combination of:

  • Wrapped newborn portraits
  • Unwrapped poses
  • Prop portraits
  • Baby detail images
  • Parent portraits
  • Sibling portraits
  • Full family portraits
  • Awake baby portraits

The exact combination depends on your baby.

And that's what makes every newborn gallery unique! And I promise to have MORE than enough set ups planned so that we will get a great variety throughout your gallery.

What If We Don't Get Every Setup?

This is another concern I hear from parents.

"What if my baby doesn't cooperate and we don't get all the photos?"

Don't worry. I specifically OVER PREPARE for sessions so that we have flexibility in the poses and set ups.

The goal of your newborn photography session isn't to check every box on a shot list.

Your baby's needs come first.

Some babies fly through several setups. Others need more time and fewer transitions.

Either way, we'll focus on creating a beautiful collection of photographs that tells your family's story.

Some of the Best Newborn Photos Are the Ones We Didn't Plan

The perfectly posed portrait is beautiful.

But so is the tiny yawn we weren't expecting.

The little stretch.

The serious expression.

The open eyes staring directly at Mom.

The tiny hand grabbing Dad's finger.

The sibling kiss that wasn't quite perfect.

The family cuddle that happened while we were simply waiting for baby to settle.

Those unexpected moments often become the photographs families love most.

Don't Reschedule Just Because Baby Is Awake

One of the most important things I want expecting parents to know is this:

Please don't worry that your baby needs to be asleep before you come to your session.

Your baby doesn't need to "perform."

They don't need to sleep on command.

They don't need to cooperate perfectly.

They simply need to be your baby.

We'll take it from there.

Final Thoughts from a Birmingham Newborn Photographer

If you're searching for a Birmingham newborn photographer, a Springville Alabama newborn photography studio, or a Trussville newborn photography studio, I want you to know that your baby's session doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.

Your baby might sleep.

Your baby might stay awake.

Your baby might need three feedings.

Your baby might want to be held the entire time.

And that's okay.

The newborn stage is unpredictable, messy, sleepy, sweet, and completely yours.

My job isn't to force your baby into a perfect session.

My job is to patiently work with your baby and preserve this incredibly fleeting season of your family's life.

Because babies don't keep.

But these memories can.
